María Ruido is an artist, researcher and teacher. She currently lives in Madrid and Barcelona, where she is a professor in the Image Department of the University of Barcelona, and is involved in several studies on the politics of representation and their contextual relationships.
The work of María Ruido explores the material and symbolic production of images in the interweaving of history, memory and migratory writings, influencing the construction of subjectivities, work and power over / of bodies.
Visual artist, researcher and cultural producer, since 1998, María Ruido develops interdisciplinary projects on the imaginaries of work in post-Fordist capitalism and on the construction of memory and its relations with the narrative forms of history.
Among her individual exhibitions stands out Total Work with Ursula Biemann (Sala Montcada, Barcelona, 2003), Os Traballos e os días (Ad Hoc Gallery, Vigo, 2006), La escena del crimen (Sala A. Palacios, Círculo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, 2008), Work & Words (1997-2008) (Carrillo Gil Museum, Mexico City, 2009), Plan Rosebud: producing bodies, building memories (CC Puertas de Castilla, Murcia, 2010) and L’oeil impératif ( Center d’Art Santa Mònica, Barcelona, 2015). Among the collective exhibitions in which she has participated in recent years are: Visto y no visto (MNCARS, Madrid, 2009); 11th Istanbul Biennial (Istanbul, 2009); Monument to the Transformation (Centro Cultural Montehermoso, Vitoria, 2010); Educando el saber (MUSAC, León, 2010); MANIFESTA 8 (Murcia / Cartagena, 2010); Images at Works (Index Foundation and Rumänska kulturinstitutet, Stockholm, 2010); Ejercicios de memoria (La Panera Art Center, Lleida, 2011); Temor y deseo de ser devorado (Bòlit Center d’Art, Girona, 2011); Decolonial Aesthetics (Fredric Jameson & Nasher Art Museum, Duke University, Durham, 2011); VideoStorias (ARTIUM, Vitoria, 2011); Rencontres Internationales (Paris / Berlin / Madrid, 2011-2012); Feminist Genealogies in Spanish Art 1960-2010 (MUSAC, León, 2012). In addition, her documentary essays have been viewed at numerous international film festivals.
